Established in late 2012 by seven families seeking a spiritual home in Hamilton, St. John’s Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was officially authorized in 2013 and elevated to full Parish status in August 2014 by His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos. Named after St. John the Evangelist, the community has grown from humble beginnings into a vibrant parish of over 40 families based in Ancaster, serving the faithful across the Hamilton, Brantford, and Cambridge regions. Today, the church offers weekly Holy Qurbana and fosters spiritual growth for the next generation through active organizations and support for students at local universities.

St.John,oneofthetwelveApostles,wasborntoaGalileanfishermannamedZebedee,andhismotherSalome.HeiscalledtheApostleofCharity,commonlybelievedtohavebeenthe“beloveddisciple”andcompanionofJesus,andiscreditedwiththeauthorshipofmanyreligiousworksincludingthreeepistlesandoneGospel.PriortotheircallsbyJesustofollowHim,John,hisbrotherJamesandtheapostlesPeterandAndrewwereallpartnersinafishingbusiness.TheyhadheardthepreachingofJohntheBaptistalongtheJordan,andwhenJesuscalledthebrothers,theyhappilylefttheirbusinessandfollowed.AndundertheguidanceofJesus,bothbrothersovercametheirdefectsofcharacter.JohnwasoneofthethreewhowitnessedtheraisingofJairus’daughterandthetransfiguration.HewasalsowithJesusinhishouroftrialintheGardenofGethsemanewherehewitnessedthecrucifixionandwhereJesusinstructedJohntotakecareofhismotherMary.JohnwastheonlyapostlewhodidnotdesertJesusduringhispassionandstoodatthefootofthecross.DuringtheperiodbetweentheResurrectionandtheAscension,JohnandPeterweretogetherontheSeaofGalilee,havingreturnedtotheiroldcalling:fishing.AndwhenJesusappearedontheshoreintheduskofmorning,Johnwasthefirsttorecognizehim.Heistraditionallyunderstoodtobetheonlyapostlewhowasnotmartyred.

Meet Fr.VineethVattakunnelKurian,theVicarofSt.John’sMalankaraOrthodoxSyrianChurchinHamilton.HecomesfromtheancientVattakunnelFamilyinKottayamthathasnurturedandprotectedtherichheritageofChristianidealsandprinciplesformanydecades,with28priestshavingbeenordainedfromthefamily.Fr.Vineethisthe29thpriestfromthisfamily,andhisparentsareVattakunnelAbrahamKurianandMariammaKurianfromtheKallooparambilfamilyinManarcadu,Kottayam.
Fr.Vineethbeganhisjourneyofservingatthealtarin2003attheageof14throughthelayingofhandsbyH.GAbrahamMarSeveriosMetropolitanathishomeparish,KottayamMarEliaCathedral.Afterhisgraduation,hecompletedhispre-seminaryperiodblessedlyunderthetutelageanddiscipleshipofHHBaseliosMarthomaDidymosIandHHBaseliosMarthomaPauloseIIatDevalokamCatholicateAramanafrom2010-2012.HewasordainedasaSubDeacon(Yaupadiyakno)on21stMay2015byHisHolinessBaseliosMarthomaPauloseIIafterhisgraduationfromtheOrthodoxTheologicalSeminaryinKottayam.HisDeacon(Shemshono)ordinationwasheldatMarAugenAshramam(PrathyaashaBavan,Kandanadu)chapelon11Dec2016byH.GDr.MathewsMarSeveriosMetropolitanofKandanaduwestDiocese(laterHHBaseliosMarthomaMathewsIII).HewascalledtothepriesthoodwiththelayingofhandsbyHHBaseliosMarthomaPauloseIIonSaturday,07June2017,athishomeparish.
